Before you enroll in dental hygienist programs it is best to understand what dental hygienists are, what do they do and what are the requirements to become certified dental hygienists. Knowing the facts prepares you of what you are going to expect.
A dental hygienist is the person who examines and cleans your teeth and gums of a dental patient. Whatever the result of their examination, they immediately report this to the dentist. Dental hygienists are not dental assistants are not professionals who can immediately receive their OJT or on the job trainings. Moreover, dental hygienists have to go through certain dental hygienist programs, pass the state exams and then receive a license. If you are living in Alabama, there are certain modified programs that allow a dental hygienist to get training, continuing education and licensure exam. Take note that Alabama is the only state that allows this and the other 49 states follow the first statement.

You can find many dental hygienists programs however take note that the American Dental Association has only accredited 286 programs for this specific course. The majority of the states impose a requirement that curriculum should be recognized by ADA in order to achieve a dental hygienists license. There must be at least a single accredited program all through out the states of America.
To qualify for dental hygienist programs, the applicant should comply with the following requirements.
1. He or She must be at least 18 years of age with high school diploma or GED.
2. The majority of the programs require the applicant to have at least reached one year in college.
3. The applicant should have at least completed all basic science and math requirements in high school.
4. Applicants should be able to show competent results in basic academic questions through college entrance exams.
5. For those looking into finishing a bachelors degree in dental hygiene, it is required that the applicant should have finished at least 2 years in college before entering the program.
You can choose either a 2-year associate's degree program or a 4-year bachelor's degree program. You can even continue your studies pursuing a master's degree that makes you capable to teach the same course to those who are interested to pursue a career in dental hygiene.
The course starts with basic knowledge of human anatomy, biology, chemistry and physiology. These are the prerequisites to oral microbiology, oral diseases, pain control, sedation, geriatric dentistry and craniofacial anatomy.
Skills that are needed for future hygienists are also covered during the course of the program. Other areas the program consist of doing oral health assessment which is teaching the student how to examine oral abnormalities including the mouth, gums, teeth and tongue that can be an indication of oral diseases. Another is learning how to review patient's history and how to collect data of patients to give better service in oral care.
Beyond all these skills, the program teaches the fundamentals of every single dental hygiene expertise such as the removal of plaque and other cavity causing deposits from the patient's teeth. This is the primary job of the dental hygienists. Also, dental hygienist programs teach them how to inform and educate the patients regardless of age on how to care for the teeth.
